niemi novel

happy 2017!

off to a slow start here at the blog, but that doesn’t mean my hands have been idle.  quite the opposite!  but since i can’t show yet what i have been stitching, i’m showing you what i started reading over winter break– mikael niemi’s popular music in vittula.

the novel is a collection of episodes told by a boy growing up in the author’s own hometown of pajala in the northernmost region of sweden.  through these tales so wonderfully evocative, imaginative and full of humor, i’m getting a glimpse of the times, the culture and the daily life of this remote area within the arctic circle.

to keep track of my armchair travels, i also started a reading log which can be accessed via the menu at the top of the home page. it’s sorted by the author’s country, so it’s easy to see where i have or haven’t covered.  not many places yet, but expanding that list is one of my goals for this year.

2017年、おめでとうございます。

ブログの出だしが遅くなってしまいましたが、制作は着々と進めていました。その作品はまだしばらくお見せできないので、代わりに冬休み中に読み始めた本をご紹介します。

ミカエル・ニエミの『世界の果てのビートルズ』
作者の故郷と同じスウェーデン北部のパヤラ村に住んでいる主人公の少年が子ども・青春時代のエピソードの数々を想像力とユーモアで語り、この北極圏地域の日常や習慣、カルチャーを思い浮かばせてくれます。

読書の旅の記録も始めました。ホームページのメニューの’reading’からアクセスできます。どこの国の作家を読んだか読んでないかが分かりやすいように作家の国籍別にリストしました。まだ少ないですが、それを増やしていくのは今年の目標の一つです。

  1. Several people that I read their blogs are doing some sort of reading challenge this year. I usually have a book that I am reading. I like your challenge as I like to read about what people do in other cultures. It will be interesting to read your thoughts about the books.
