niemi novel

happy 2017!

off to a slow start here at the blog, but that doesn’t mean my hands have been idle.  quite the opposite!  but since i can’t show yet what i have been stitching, i’m showing you what i started reading over winter break– mikael niemi’s popular music in vittula.

the novel is a collection of episodes told by a boy growing up in the author’s own hometown of pajala in the northernmost region of sweden.  through these tales so wonderfully evocative, imaginative and full of humor, i’m getting a glimpse of the times, the culture and the daily life of this remote area within the arctic circle.

to keep track of my armchair travels, i also started a reading log which can be accessed via the menu at the top of the home page. it’s sorted by the author’s country, so it’s easy to see where i have or haven’t covered.  not many places yet, but expanding that list is one of my goals for this year.

  1. Several people that I read their blogs are doing some sort of reading challenge this year. I usually have a book that I am reading. I like your challenge as I like to read about what people do in other cultures. It will be interesting to read your thoughts about the books.
