Berries & Tigers

stumpwork berry torakichi 1 torakichi 2

in the end, i decided to try both color combinations.
i was actually leaning more towards the purple variation, but i couldn’t entirely do away with the pink either.  decisiveness, is definitely not my forte.

this next design is going be dimensional embroidery that includes stumpwork berries.  though making these is just a matter of wrapping a wooden bead with embroidery thread and– in this case– topping it with a bead, these little berries can be surprisingly time-consuming to create.

and what always pops into mind whenever i’m working on these berries is torakichi from a tiger in the land of dreams by tiger tateishi.  one of my favorite picture books from childhood, it’s about a tiger named torakichi traveling through his own dream world.  the short but rhythmical narrative is soothing to read, but the real treat here is the surreal illustrations.  the images of torakichi wrapping himself into a circular form with just his tail sticking out is just like a partially made, striped stumpwork berry…

so even as my hands keep busy, my mind is off wandering with torakichi.

  1. It is always nice to have someplace to visit while creating. Make sure the tiger doesn’t get you.
